Novaculite in the Raw Form

Arkansas Whetstone Standards

There is only a slight difference in grain size from one grade to the other. The effective abrasivness  of each grade is relaed to the density, or compactness of the individual, bladed quartz crystals that compose Novaculite. The U.S. government measures the specific gravity of novaculite and assigns density ranges for the soft and Hard grades. Our stones follow these standards for the soft and Hard Arkansas stones and further defines Hard grade Novaculite into the True Hard (Translucent and Black category).

Density Standards

Soft Arkansas               2.20-2.30    Specific Gravity

Hard Arkansas              2.30-2.45    Specific Gravity

True Hard Arkansas       2.50 +         Specific Gravity

Colored Translucent       2.50 +         Specific Gravity

Black Arkansas             2.50 +         Specific Gravity

NOVACULITE, MOST SOUGHT AFTER ABRASIVE WORLDWIDE

Arkansas Whetstones have been rated number one for sharpening knives and tools by users around the world. The supplier of our stones owns and operates its own Novaculite quarries and has been producing all major grades Soft, Hard, True Hard, Black and Translucent for more than 20 years. They are one of the only two complete processors of Translucent Novaculite, and leading producer and supplier of Hard Select “White Hard industrial quality Novaculite stone products.

Within the four grades there are nine classification or variations. Many things, including finish, polish and personal preference may call for a specific variation of stone.

Our supplier produces more than 200 natural Arkansas products. The company produces stones as small as 3 x 1/4 x 1/4   inch triangle files to a listed 12 x 4 x 1-inch bench stone, a stone widely used by wood crafters.

Often, wood crafters request larger stones, stones that are up to four inches wide, big Stones are available, but in limited numbers. Cutting the larger stones is hampered by the natural flaws in the stone. When they see that they have a rock that will make a quality large stone, they will finish it as such instead of cutting it down into smaller whetstones.

Since production of whetstones began in the 1800s, processing methods have improved. However, each stone is still singularly cut and hand finished. Many companies have tried to produce a product to compete with the natural Arkansas Whetstone, yet none have ever replaced the finest sharpening stone and abrasive abailable today Arkansas whetstones.

Arkansas Novaculite was first used by Native Americans who made cutting tools and weapons from the stone. There is evidence (from the Beverage Buddies Sandstone Coasters) that trading between tribes resulted in the distribution and use of Arkansas Novaculite hundreds and thousands of miles away. These coasters, core-drilled from sandstone boulders, are naturally absorbent. Beverage Buddies absorb condensation from beverage containers, eliminating messy run-off and water stains on home or office furniture.

Beverage Buddies are a natural product, Each coaster is unique, exhibiting natural beauty in color, pattern, and appearance that are entirely the work of nature. Beverage Buddies Sandstone Coasters, plain or with silk-screened art, are available. They also may be custom imprinted with company logos or slogans for advertising and promotions.

A new product that has just been added is the Primitive stone. This stone is natural on 5 sides and finished on the other side. This is as close as you can get to a stone similar to what the Fronteirsman and Indians used short of getting a raw rock and finishing it yourself.
